The Flynn #11 thread measuring wire set has been around for a long time for measuring 60 degree threads U.S.S.N.C. and S.A.E.N.F. 40 to 3-1/2 threads per inch (measures 22 different threads).  Now there is a #11-M set for measuring Metric 60 degree threads .5 mm to 8 mm (measures 21 different threads).  These two sets provide the least expensive and the most simple method of measuring external threads.  There is a chart provided with each set.  This chart shows which wires to use for each thread to be measured and the amount to be added to the major diameter.  The major diameter is the nominal size of the part to be threaded, thus while a part may actually measure .005" under this major diameter, the major diameter must still be used in calculating the thread measurement.
